Sad but true but this cemetery is one of the bigger tourist attractions in Buenos Aires. Recoleta Cemetery is home to the grave of Eva Peron. You might remember that she had a string of dance/pop hits back in the 80’s and 90’s…oops that’s Madonna. Sorry. She played her in the movie. Sorry.
“Evita” is remembered by most Portenos as Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Santa Claus and well…er…MADONNA, all rolled into one. You want to piss off a local in Buenos Aires, then make fun of Eva Peron. My Madonna jokes didn’t play too well down there.

Evita is not buried with her famous husband but with her family (Duarte’s). The cemetery is all above ground. Sea level has nothing to do with it (like in New Orleans). It’s just a place where all the really rich and famous from BA are “buried”. The mausoleums are pretty fancy and elaborate and there are a lot of them. This is another reminder that there is no middle class in BA. You either have it or you don’t.
There are cats hanging out all over the cemetery. This was amusing to me but some people I talked to found it creepy. The cemetery keeps the cats there to keep the rats away.
They should try that in my neighborhood…
